Pottery in Sifnos: Rekindling the Flame of an Old Furnace

A few days ago, we had the chance to get a taste of bygone times. Antonis Atsonios, one of the best pottery makers on Sifnos, had a brilliant idea. He decided to use again an old furnace that had not been used for almost 50 years. This furnace is in Tsopos at Vathi.

Pottery has a long tradition on Sifnos and «tsikalades», the local word for potters, used this kind of furnaces for their ceramics. Today things have changed since electric furnaces reaching 1000oC temperatures are used for this phase of production. However, we all appreciated Antonis’ idea to re-discover how things were run in the old times.

A touching moment when Antonis with the help of some locals rekindled the old flame!
